Purpose of the residency
My goal is to write a book - fully illustrated by japanese contemporary artists - about dolls and love - stories related to dolls. It will include a big research about "presence effect" : how do japanese artists create the feeling that a doll has the ability to think, to dream and to desire ? Why are japanese dolls so close to the invisible world ? The notion of "presence" and "absence" should be most interesting to study, in regard to my investigation about doll art but also about the legends related to dolls. This book should be published in France around 2013, under the title "Les poupées fatales au Japon".
Plan during the residency
I will get appointment with japanese photographers, painters, illustrators, film directors as well as doll makers or sculptors and try to undertand japanese culture by asking them about esthetic and philosophy. In order to get "from the inside" their vision of the world, I will do my best to see the process of creation.
I will also get appointments with art - galeries, museums, universities and private collections in order to illustrate my book with historical documents such as old photographs or ukiyo-e. In my books, artworks from the past are mixed with contemporary artworks in a way that enables the reader to fully understand the specific aspects of japanese esthetic.
