I will study the relationship between traditional and contemporary Japanese music. I am interested in music organization and notation, and in comparing western notation systems with those of other culture. In Japanese traditional music, the genre of "Sokyoku" and the Gagaku instrumental music "kigaku" are very distinctive. I will particularly explore its unique musical notation systems, "Shakuhachi" and "taiko".
Besides, I will research contemporary Japanese music and sound art by organizing meetings with established and emerging composers and sound artists, attending concerts and lectures, and participating in seminars and workshops. NTT-Intercommunication Center, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, Yokohama Kanagawa Kemmin Hall, Tokyo Experimental Festival are important models for me to study.
