The exhibition [Part 1] features Nobuko Tsuchiya, Yuri Suzuki and Jr-Shin Luo (Taiwan) who participated in TWS Residency Programs and stayed in Seoul, Stockholm or Tokyo in recent years. In addition, all creators will show new works for this exhibition in particular focusing on their development or influence after their experiences of the residencies. During the exhibition, the creators will appear at the gallery talks and the workshops with environmental sound and daily objects.

Ever since its opening in 2001, Tokyo Wonder Site has undertaken a wide range of programs to support and foster young artists. One such program, TWS-Emerging, is associated with the open call exhibition, Tokyo Wonder Wall, which has been providing talented young artists with a gateway to success. Each year 100 people are selected from about a thousand applicants, and their works are displayed at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. A further process then selects 14 of those 100 for the opportunity to show their works to the wider public at the gallery in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.

TWS-Emerging invites the same 100 artists to participate in another exhibition, and those chosen are put on display at Tokyo Wonder Site Hongo. For this year, 20 young artists were picked to show their works. Not only does each of the selected artists have their own individual exhibition, they are also invited to participate in a number of programs at TWS to raise their profiles and expand their activities. They are eligible to exhibit their works in the TEAM program at Tokyo Wonder Site Shibuya for example or take part in residency programs at Tokyo Wonder Site Aoyama: Creator-in-Residence as well as overseas residencies under TWS's international exchange programs.

Tokyo Wonder Site (TWS) serves as a Tokyo platform for the work of creators from across the globe. Every year around one hundred individuals take part in the program, dedicating themselves enthusiastically to the production of artworks both in Tokyo and at designated locations overseas. Day-to-day art research and production take place at TWS throughout the year, artists in residence and other creators interacting and encouraging each other to take new and exciting directions in their work.

The TWS CiR Open Studio will showcase the work of 3 creators who participated in the Creator-in-Residence (CiR) program at TWS in 2012. With the 21st century came a growing recognition of the importance of creative hubs in art production; of places where creative individuals can mix and inspire each other, forming new cultural currents. Residency programs too continue to grow more vital than ever as settings for the creation of art.
Tokyo Story is a collection of Tokyo tales spun by creators, tales born out of Tokyo, and tales spun by Tokyo.
A story from Tokyo dedicated to returning hope and good cheer to the Japanese capital, and to Japan as a whole; to helping make the whole world a better place through the power of creativity.

The program inviting young exhibition organizers to apply with concrete plans for art shows.

We call for exhibition proposals from artists planning exhibitions with their own participation and aspiring planners (curators) .

Selected projects will receive support from Tokyo Wonder Site, to be put into practice in the form of exhibitions at TWS Hongo.

The world is presently standing at a significant turning point, whereas we in our role as initiators in the realm of art and culture need to redefine our mission, and review the meaning of hosting exhibitions. It is a phase of fundamental reconsideration of all kinds of things and events we used to take for granted without much reflection. One notable recent trend is a shift in the perception of art, regarding artworks no longer as mere objects, but looking for a new definition of art in the pursuit of reality through creative acts and processes. The 2012 edition, the 7th in this series, aims to readdress the questions, "What kinds of location and experimentation are really needed now? And what should an exhibition as a public event be like?"

This year an extra award from the curation seminar is given to one proposal in addition to the three selected winners.

------------------------------------------------------------------
The connection between artist and curator to me looks quite similar to the relationship between the ordinary and the extraordinary parts of daily life.
"TOC" is an installation piece involving actions with a toaster in the streets of Tokyo, through which Kaori Ichimura, the artist introduced in this exhibition, aims to create extraordinary sceneries. However the longer this action continues, the more it turns into a perfectly normal behavior for the artist, so the notion of extraordinariness seems to fade away in the creative process. On the other hand, the relationships and vocabularies that are supposed to emerge in the process of curation are being treated and exhibited as a single work.
It appears to me that the artist-curator combination in which positions are indefinite and occasionally reversed questions the validity of drawing a dividing line between both, and whether such boundary exists in the first place.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Fast forward to 2012, and what we had absorbed from our mediated surroundings last year has since diverged into complexities and the unresolved oblivions of now. With the omnipresence of 2011 persisting, a perspective is called with which to draw its ghosts to the here and now.
It was at the scratch of last year, with events like the Arab Spring, the Japanese triple disaster and Wikileaks, when artists were first contacted by Nine Yamamoto-Masson and Mirak Jamal to propose pieces in an environment of formidable media dynamics. Debuting a year later, a selection of these predominantly new works is placed in their specific connectedness to the framework; a problematic of exposing/reflecting/documenting a year, or a particular event. As such, the exhibition allows for a media-to-artwork asynchronism that raises the question of how to delegate an event.

20111111111111111s is pronounced "two thousand elevens". It is an exhibition platform set in theme to the year 2011, and inspired by its many towering events and untold accounts captured through a complex of perspectives. The cacophony that dominated the headlines of last year was transmitted through the many channels of mainstream media and social networks. Within the constraint of a unified space and as a counterpoint to the lifespan of a news story, the assemblage of works in the exhibition aim to trigger responses that communicate tangible and virtual experiences, immediate or distant realities of that year. 2011 will thereto be mirrored in fragments, where the gaze of the inceptor (the artist) is carried out in condensation towards object-pieces and media works. The artworks function as mementos that trigger points of (re-)discovery in which to connect a bygone time to our mendable present.

"It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones."
Nelson Mandela.

From the lleca to the cohue: Photography in penitentiary centers.

The title of the exhibition is taken from the slang used by prisoners in Venezuela. "From the lleca to the cohue" means "From the street to the hole." The staging of this exhibition wants to communicate the results of the educational program that the Venezuelan photographer Violette Bule has been developing for over two years in five prisons in Venezuela. The drive shaft of the project gets around off the idea of transforming the photography as a medium for expressing freedom, social transformation and job placement. The participatory and pluralist character of this project favors the observation and investigation of the prisoner's collective and individual behavior in front of the photographic act. The photograph, in this context, becomes a tool for visual communication and expression of the symbolic reality of the subjects.

The exhibition also seeks to communicate and strengthen the social commitment of this kind of photographic work in the Venezuelan prison system. Its purpose is to create an educational program that makes the lives of prisoners more appropriated and human.  This project is unprecedented in the history of Venezuelan photography.

------------------------------------------------------------------
In the literary world it is often said that a novelist's qualities are all contained in his or her first book, and the same probably applies also to an artist's debut work. Then again, re-recordings of musicians reinterpreting their own songs clearly indicate their respective individual attitudes. When an artist reworks a previously made piece from a contemporary point of view, the question is how he/she feels about it, and which part of the work should be changed and which shouldn't. In either case, the outcome certainly reflects the real amplitude of that artist's of emotions.
Six artists who have been following in the footsteps of conceptual art, Fluxus, the High Red Center group and other branches of art history primarily in the fields of performance, video and installation, create remakes of their respective debut works, and introduce the resulting 2012 versions in this exhibition. By focusing on the starting points and digging deep into the intentions behind each of these works rather than looking only at the surface, the exhibition aims to be an occasion for the artists, curators and visitors alike to explore the basics of the human appetite for self-expression, and function as a foundation for art in the 2010s.

WONDER SEEDS is an open competition art fair aimed to connect young artists and potential new art consumers. In this program designed to support young artists following the concept of "BUY = SUPPORT", selected entries of accessible small works (paintings, prints, illustrations, photographs, etc.) from all across Japan are displayed and sold. Every year, the works of about 100 artists chosen from a large number of entries will be exhibited at TWS Shibuya or Hongo, where visitors can casually purchase affordable artworks that they like. Through WONDER SEEDS, not only young artists will learn the notion of selling their artworks, but also art fans will experience the awareness of art ownership.

Try to find a better place, but soon it's all the same. What once you thought was a paradise is not just what it seems... I know it's hard for you to
change your way of life... If you do I'm sure you'll see the end is not yet near. Where do we go from here?
Chicago, from "Where Do We Go From Here?"

The title of this song by the rock band Chicago, known for many political tunes in the late 1960s, was drawn from the words of a television reporter providing live coverage of man's first landing on the moon. The idea of progress that underpinned the moon landing coexisted with a great gloom that began with the Cuban missile crisis in 1962 and carried through the Viet Nam War as the young generation sought to create a new world unlike what had come before. As I thought about where we should go in the wake of the unprecedented disaster of last year's Great East Japan Earthquake, I could hear this old song playing in my head.

Have we been able, over the last year and a half, to clearly identify a destination on which to fix our sights? Regrettably, it seems safe to say the road ahead remains unclear. At the same time, one thing is undoubtedly different than before: our outlook. We cannot answer the question of where to go from here, but the answer may be found in our outlook and our attitude in continuing to pose the question.

An artist-in-residence program means more than going overseas to stay somewhere else for a while. A residency is an opportunity for an artist to step outside his or her own context, to look upon the world, for a time, through different eyes. There is something in the air, there, that reveals a world previously unseen.

On the Agenda of the Arts 2011 addressed the theme "Where Do We Go From Here?" through lectures and workshops conducted during the residency period.

Artists who joined us in thinking about how to answer that question then will be coming back again this year to introduce their latest work.

*Supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan, in Fiscal Year 2011

The TWS CiR Open Studio will showcase the work of creators invited or sent to take part in the Creator in Residence (CiR) program at Tokyo Wonder Site (TWS) in 2011.

With the 21st century came a growing recognition of the importance of creative hubs in art production; of places where creative individuals can mix and inspire each other, forming new cultural currents. Residency programs too continue to grow more vital than ever as settings for the creation of art.

TWS serves as a Tokyo platform for the work of creators from across the globe.

The 2011 edition, the sixth in this series, aims to readdress the questions, "What kinds of location and experimentation are really needed now? And what should an exhibition as a public event be like?"

This year an extra award is given to one proposal in addition to the three selected winners.

This year sees the launch at TWS of the "Emerging/Master" series of exhibitions showcasing early, or "emerging" work as well as current offerings from prominent mid-career artists ("masters"). For the landmark first show in the series we are delighted to welcome Makoto Aida, a Japanese artist of international stature, in a presentation of work from the early years of Aida's career, when he was an emerging artist like those featured in the TWS-Emerging show run by TWS as part of its ongoing support for young artistic talent. To coincide with the exhibition Aida will allow public access as he works on his current focus, the Monument for Nothing series. This first Emerging/Master will also introduce the practice of emerging artists in Aida's intimate circle.

///////////////////

What is art, or fine art, or contemporary art; what are the arts? That which is predicated on such a question is probably destined to perish in the not-too-distant future. Whether it be art or not, the only thing to endure down the generations will be making what one wants to make or ought to make, or living the way one wants to live and leaving something as a trace of it. I apologize for saying this, but right now art academics are witchdoctors, fatal to those who heed their advice. This show represents part of this day-to-day conviction of mine. --AIDA Makoto

The TWS CiR Open Studio will showcase the work of creators invited or sent to take part in the Creator in Residence (CiR) program at Tokyo Wonder Site (TWS) in 2010.

Roadside shopping malls and family restaurants, residential complexes and brand-new detached houses... Such outskirt scenarios as they can be found all across Japan have been subject to massive criticism for causing damage to the landscape, a loss of "hometowns", and a defection of local communities among others. However, even in Tokyo and other major cities, sceneries that are easily mistaken for suburban areas are no longer an uncommon sight today. As a consequence of globalization, the entire world is about to be covered by suburban landscapes. The issue of suburbanization is getting increasingly compelling for all of us.
This exhibition features artists born in suburban environments, and those eager to modify and update suburban areas by their own hands. Without idolatrously pushing forward in optimistic reliance on technical innovation, and with no nostalgia worshipping things past and unrepeatable either, it is a novel kind of attempt to explore possible new styles of living in suburban environments.

......................................................................................................
What is "Luxurious Time and Space" for us ...? In the summer of 2010, On Site Lab Workshop 5 was conducted around the Asakusa area and TWS Aoyama under the theme of"Luxurious Time and Space." TWS Hongo is now having a document shop which will retrace this year's workshop.
 ......................................................................................................

The series of workshop "On Site Lab Program," which was founded by Tokyo Wonder Site in 2006, brings awareness to the importance of creators working on the challenges in the society and gathers creators and participants from a variety of genre and nationalities to find the possibilities to work on the same topic together.  Having "Conversation with Art and Environment" as the main theme, we have invited tutors from both in/outside of Japan to facilitate workshops and lectures to discover the new horizons of knowledge.

The themes of the past four years have been: "+hand", "Waterfront Environment", "Global Warming and Forestation" and "Waste".  This year, as a collaboration with GTS (Geidai, Taito, Sumida) Sightseeing Art Project and University of the Arts London, we investigated on a theme, "Luxurious Time and Space".

Today, the society needs new cultural, economical and environmental values.  The research in this summer took place in Taito Ward and Sumida-Ward, which was the center during the Edo Period and now draws attention for the Tokyo Sky Tree, of which construction will be completed in 2011, to reconsider its richness for the earth and the humanity.

In this document show at TWS Hongo, we will exhibit some documents from this summer's workshop. Also, works created as an outcome of the research and the workshop will be shown at the exhibition "Tokyo Void," one of programs from "GTS(Geidai Taito Sumida) Sightseeing Art Project 2010."

During this session, there scheduled to be some lectures by various experts. For details, please refer to the information below.

Likening their relationship to that of "half-brothers", the two artists embark on a journey with the aim to define together with many other "explorers" the genre's horizon, while taking a continuously questioning and wondering approach to the new relationships between places, society, time, people and actions that emerge from the expanding realm of IT technology.

The showcase for discovery and development of young artists'

talents, NEW DIRECTIONS is the curatorial project co-organized by Kyoto University of Art and Design and Tokyo Wonder Site. The missions of this project is to shed light on the works of students and recent graduates of Japanese and overseas art universities, to exhibit these artists' works as the prospects of coming generation, and to let the artists develop their artistic careers.

Last year, Shigeo Goto (Professor at Kyoto University of Art and

Design) and Kazue Kobata (Professor at Tokyo University of the Arts) co-curated the exhibition of seven artists selected from the art universities across Japan.

Inviting Taipei National University of the Arts as the partnership school and Prof. Chien-Hung Huang as this year's co-curator, NEW DIRECTIONS 'Trans-Plex' is a challenging exhibition, encourages the artists and students to expand the discussion on the speed, states and directions of 'contemporary art'.

IMAGINARY MUSEUM OF THE O-COLLECTION - magical museum tour, the continuation of a series first launched in 2007, introduces emerging Japanese contemporary artists through a collector's world view we explore the meaning of collecting art. Last year two shows were titled Alternative (Post) Modern: Room 7 and Room 8 focuses on the community at loose in the present day. This latest show focuses on the new activities of 7 emerging artist groups. Now times are changing very fast, and Art desires to express a 'freshness,' the present moment, a connection to time and place, and the making of a relationship. In these occasions, we consider that "What is the collection?,""What will you collect?"and seek to challenge from the static notion of the noun "collection" to the dynamic notion of the verb "collect."

14 stories, spun from meetings in and departures from Tokyo.

A fundamental question raised during Tokyo Wonder Site Creator in Residence Program;

"We all die. Let's talk about real thing."

Joonho Jeon discovered Bunraku in Tokyo, through which he explored commonalities between Korea and Japan. A human bone carved out of Zelkova lets us forget about the death in front of us, while casting out the impossibilities of religion and raising an important question. We need religions when living becomes difficult like nowadays; but what can a religion do for us? We can hear urgent cries, as the result of impossibilities and hopes intertwining together.

But Åbake, who can flip such question up and down, would probably raise a question back to you:
"What is real?"

Tokyo Wonder Site Aoyama : Creator in Residence was established in 2006 and has hosted around 400 creators and supported their research and production. Also, we have supported young emerging artists departing Japan to participate in residencies abroad. This is a platform for fundamental questions raised by such artists.

We would like to reconsider the questions raised by all creators between 2009/2010.

It is our great pleasure to inform you that Tokyo Wonder Site will be hosting Emerging Artist Support Program 2009.
This program consists of three separate projects which were selected from 33 applications last year.

Emerging Artists Support Program 2009:
Right after its opening in 2001, Tokyo Wonder Site launched the "TWS-Emerging" series with the aim to foster young creators. In addition to this program for artists, a support program for aspiring planners (curators) was implemented in 2006, inviting young exhibition organizers to apply with concrete plans for art shows.

【MEAT SHOP SPY】

This exhibition presents "spy activity" playing in a meat shop, by means of an installation. Unlike the spy described in the entertainment including movies, who would attempt to gain information from a nation or a huge authority, the spy in this exhibition tries to get information from a small meat shop in a town. In the tiny meat shop "visible" and "invisible" portions of the huge social structure and food culture are hidden.
The activity of the spy starts by infiltrating a meat shop somewhere in Tokyo, in working as an employee. The spy collects information related to the exterior and the interior of the meat shop (the wall, the floor, the door and the light), the tools (the meat-cutting knives, the glass cases and the machinery) and confidential information (love and betrayal between the shop owner and an employee). The collected information in notes, photos, videos or souvenirs, is going to be recreated into another material.
A "second meat shop" will be set up in the venue, combining fiction and reality related to the information, visible and invisible parts of the society. This illustrates the confrontation between individual and society, in the form of a continuous spy activity.

【Deep Dig Dug】

Like miners building up a tunnel system together, artists can build networks with like-minded people through communication beyond the differences of nationalities and languages. Following this idea five artists from Japan, Germany and Spain with their various cultural backgrounds will turn TWS Hongo into a grotto, an artificial cave as a metaphor for a fictitious meeting point of artists and visitors.
The title of the exhibition combines "DIGDUG" (name of an 8 bit strategy video game released by Namco in the mid 80's, in which one digs caves in virtual landscapes) with the English word "deep". This refers not only to the action of "digging forward" as the theme of the exhibition, but also reminds one of the common influence of mass media and comic culture on the work of these five artists, despite their varied approaches to creating art.
The interlacing of a wall painting that displays physical effects by Motoko Dobashi, paintings made by Kaori Nakajima, digital collages by Pablo Alonso, photographs by Martin Hast, and the sound emanating from sculpture by Matthias Maenner reveal multiple images of an underground world.

Trainer of man, the hand multiplies him in space and time
Henry Focillon, 'The life of forms in art.'

DO NOT TOUCH THE WORKS OF ART, the warning reads. Why would one do such thing in the first place? People generally touch works of art for trying to understand something plain visual information sometimes is incapable to transmit or to add a trace of ones own hand to the history of the object.

"Touching is believing", it's what makes an image return to its material stage and a sculptural form, an ergonomic experience. When the making of the artwork is charged with such haptic experience, the residual energy left by the hand of the artist, seems to be always an invitation for the hand of the viewer. A work that does incite touching, generally, also incites thinking about touching; a precondition to the full appreciation of sculpture and surface based and representational painting.

In cultures richly devoted to the senses as a unifying experience between mind and matter, haptic aspects of art-making and consuming become so evident, they are sometimes taken for granted. This exhibition focuses on the works of six artists from two diversely sense-dominated cultures, whose working habits are closely associated with the hand and whose ideas are loosely inspired by tradition.

Tokyo Wonder Site Hongo is to host an exciting new exhibition in the IMAGINARY MUSEUM of the O-collection - magical museum tour. This latest installment in the series is Room 5 "Chiezo Taro - Posthuman artist".

This latest show, the continuation of a series launched last year, is like the others composed of works from the collection of Mr. Satoshi Okada. Our aim is to provide a permanent venue for works by emerging Japanese contemporary artists similar to the permanent exhibitions in an art museum. In conjunction with the series, programs such as TWS-Emerging and INDEX#4 involving students and young artists in their 20s and 30s are being run to help forge ties among artists, and artists and art lovers. Two shows were exhibited last year to considerable acclaim: Room 1: Kuwahara & Kato - According to the "basso ostinato" of Japanese traditional mentality and Room 2: Yuichi Higashionna, Daisuke Ohba & Akiyoshi Mishima - Design and Soul.

The Okada collection includes numerous leading works by emerging Japanese artists, but selected from unconventional perspectives while the artists in question were still unknown. The collection could also be described as an attempt to explore the depths of what it means to be human, including the irrationality of human nature. In that the works here reflect and convey the diverse sensibilities emanating from the megalopolis of Tokyo, they go beyond the confines of a personal collection to present a universal challenge.
Room 5 showcases the work of Chiezo Taro. This show in a series of rooms at an imaginary art museum will run for approximately five months. Watch out after that for the next installment Room 6, featuring work by Toshiyuki Konishi and Fumiaki Akahane.

Taro, and old friend of mine, is in my view some kind of mad scientist rather than an artist. He got aware of the limitations of anthropocentric thinking quite early, and the works he comes up with are all grotesque pieces of art that seem to be ridiculing the value concepts of inwardness. That grotesqueness tells us through suddenly appearing notions of violence about the presence of something huge and horrendous beyond human scale, and it is the existence of that menace that serves as the best proof of the invalidity of anthropocentric thinking. What better description than "posthuman artist" for him then?

(Satoshi Okada Representative, Art Acephale)

Tokyo Wonder Site Hongo is to host an exciting new exhibition in the IMAGINARY MUSEUM of the O-collection - magical museum tour. This latest installment in the series is Room 4 "Julian Schnabel - Poem of a clumsy diver".

Room 4 showcases the work of Julian Schnabel. This show in a series of rooms at an imaginary art museum will run for approximately five months. Watch out after that for the next installment Room 5, and more, featuring work by Chiezo Taro, Toshiyuki Konishi and Fumiaki Akahane.

Part of an affiliate program with universities, this string of exhibitions was designed as a stage for practical experience for art management students, and a platform for exchange among a young generation of artists. This event marks the third exhibition co-hosted by Tokyo Wonder Site, reflecting the meaning and significance we are seeing in occasions for students from the Kansai region to exhibit their works in Tokyo.

In the previous two rounds we received next to entries from planners (curators) also numerous exhibition proposals from artists planning exhibitions with their own participation. Many of those artists' selfproduced exhibition outlines were based on innovative ideas for types of art beyond existing genres.
In this year, three exhibition plans: "Normadic! Shayne Ehman & Friends" by Aya Takada, "DIG & BURY'S Yuji Oda" by Nobuhiko Terasawa and "OCTO_HASI BALKAN PICNIC" by Natalija Ribovic and Toru Fujita, were selected and presented at TWS Hongo.

Tokyo Wonder Site is pleased to announce its next exhibition, " IMAGINARY MUSEUM of the O-collection - magical museum tour ".
Present day Tokyo is in need of more occasions to see Japanese young contemporary artists' works on a regular basis. This is why we decided to present young Japanese artists' works from the Satoshi Okada Collection in a permanent exhibition at Tokyo Wonder Site Hongo for about half a year. The Okada Collection encompasses a huge number of works representing a young generation of Japanese artists, each selected from an individual perspective at a time when the respective artist was still unknown. The collection can be considered as an attempt to explore the depth of the human mind with all its irrationalities. Also in terms of reflecting and communicating the wealth of different sensibilities that emerged out of the environment of metropolitan Tokyo, these works appeal to the viewer as parts of an exhibition that exceeds the framework of a private collection.

Video Art from London is the project which nominated for the curating competition.(This competition purposes for supporting emerging curators and artists)

This exhibition introduces video works of young artists based in London. Artists with various cultural backgrounds are active in multicultural London. Reflecting this situation, not all of the artists in this show were born in the U.K.. For these artists living in a world filled with variety and multiculturalism, working with video art might be a way of crossing cultural differences. The artists works deal with bodies and movement, humour hidden within the everyday, the unpredictable born from a twisted perspective, skepticism towards cultural stereotypes, and ambivalent feelings towards nature. Such themes are sharable by people living in the contemporary global society. Video art is one of the most accessible forms of art today. Hence, this exhibition will provide an opportunity to facilitate an encounter between artists showing their work for the first time in Japan, and the Japanese audience. We hope to provide a common ground crossing the geographical distance between the U.K. and Japan, whilst dwelling this global world.

It is a public subscription exhibition that was installed in Tokyo Wonder Site as a stage for young artists to present their works to a large number of art fans. In this program designed to support young artists following the concept of "buy = support", selected entries of small, two-dimensional works (paintings, prints, illustrations, photographs, etc.) from all across Japan are displayed and offered for sale. The works of approximately 100 artists chosen from about a large number of entries every year are exhibited at TWS Shibuya, where visitors can purchase the works they like. Next to the support of young artists, another idea behind Wonder Seeds is the fostering of young art fans, and the animation of the general public to buy art .

Tokyo Wonder Site has so far hosted the Tokyo Wonder Wall and other exhibitions aimed at showcasing the works of Japanese newcomer artists. The opening of Tokyo Wonder Site Shibuya in 2005 marks an occasion to widen the scope within which Tokyo Wonder Site is going to focus on the Japanese contemporary art scene in the future. This exhibition will be the first step.

"After The Reality" (2004, Hiromi Yoshii Gallery, curated by Kentaro Ichihara), which focused on young Japanese creators who commenced their artistic work after the 9/11 disaster, was an exhibition that introduced a new current in young Japanese art. As a sequel to "After The Reality," this time Ichihara curate "ZONE - POETIC MOMENT -," and eight artists have been selected for this show.

Next to the support of young artists, another idea behind Wonder Seeds is the fostering of young art fans, and the animation of the general public to buy art.

Exhibition of video installation by Masayuki Kawai in public place. The work is the projected images on the four windows in Shibuyaku Kinroukaikan (Worker's Welfare Hall Shibuya), which are facing the Koen Street, and people can watch the images at the street. Motifs of the works are selected from Man'yōshū ("Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves", the oldest existing collection of Japanese poetry). Images change from hour to hour, so they also tell the time like a public clock. This is the artwork about "time" in the city view of information society.

Language is one of the themes addressed in the art of Candice Breitz, who says, "Language inhabits and determines one's relationship to the world." Her exhibition at TWS was the occasion for the world premiere of her film "Aiwa to Zen." Conceived during Breitz's first visit to Japan in 2002, the work was shot and produced in Tokyo. It is structured 100 or so Japanese words first heard by the artist before coming to Japan. The stereotypical but somewhat odd characters, including a "Super-salary man," speak a nonsensical language a form of Japanese consisting entirely of brand names and images that are still regarded as exotic. We tend to think we live in an age when all information travels instantaneously and is shared universally, but this film makes us aware that Japan's image is perceived only through words of this sort. Through Breitz's work, visitors witnessed moments in the paradoxical and mysterious relationship between people, language and the world.
