Profile

Born in Paris in 1969, Valerie Mréjen graduated from the Ecole d'Art de Cergy-Pontoise and has since exhibited widely in France and abroad, including the Jeu de Paume in 2008. Best known for her short films and videos, Mréjen's practice explores the possibilities of language, its multiple facets and its emptiness. Mréjen has extended this reflection in several acclaimed novels including The Citrus (2001) and Eau sauvage (2007). She has also directed two documentaries - "Pork and Milk' (2004) and' Valvert' (2008) and is currently completing the first feature film she co-directed with Bertrand Schefer.

About works / performance

I started by making short video films mainly presented in exhibitions and festivals : these films were inspired by everyday situations and misunderstandings. I tried to explore the void of language in certain circumstances and the way people try to communicate in a more or less successful way... I then directed more narrative short films and two documentaries. The way people talk and express themselves is generally at the center of my focus. I like to work at the crossing of documentary and fiction.

Comment

I usually take inspiration from expressions, words, cliché sentences… I am also very interested in the question of the community, in belonging or identifying to a group. This was the central theme of my documentary Pork and Milk and will probably be present again in this new “Choses Shibuya” film.
