Post-graduated in History, Magali Laigne enrolled MA Graphic Design in Camberwell College of Arts - University of the Arts London, where she postgratuated in 2008.

Experiencing photography as a medium to explore the everyday (inspired by photographers like Emmanuel Sougez, Ralph Gibson, Yoshi Ueda..), she turned to Wabi Sabi after the workshop at Tokyo Wonder Site and various trips to Japan. She's now living in Kyoto where she start a new project about photography and memory.

About works / performance

During post-graduation I started to work on photography. Based on everyday life. Coming to Tokyo for the workshop, I discovered, step by step, japanese art and feelings..and wabi sabi. I decided to include it to my research process. After an exhibition in London, I had the chance to come to live in Kyoto where I start a new project on photography and memory, based on very old japanese portraits.

Comment

It was an unbelievable surprise to discover that some japanese cultural elements, like wabi sabi, were pretty close to my basic researches in London. It was not difficult so to include them in my work after the workshop. Nowadays, they are entirely part of my work process. I would say that the workshop, despite having pleasure and great stimulation to work with Japanese artists, gave me deeper thoughts and enriched my forthcoming works.
