Profile

Will French was born in Melbourne and spent his childhood in Korea and Indonesia. He completed a Masters in Visual Arts at Sydney College of the Arts in 2004 and has gone on to pursue his artistic practice and curatorial projects across Australia.

Will French's work carries a common thread of a wry humor and playfulness. His practice addresses a broad range of issues and ideas, from the popular to the political. French examines his own position in relation to these concepts and showcases them in a manner that encourages the viewer to accept his terms. He often utilizes accessible objects and amplifies their reading through a slight tweak or blatant upending.

French has a multi-disciplinary art practice. A primary trait of his practice is the gathering of new processes and skills. Intentionally challenging himself with each new project, Past works have included: remote control rock guitars, soft sculpted instruments, traditionally sewn flags, production and racing of a demolition derby car, chocolate wheels of death and a motorcycle-powered sewing machine.

Will French is the 2008 recipient of the Fauvette Loureiro Memorial Artist Travel Scholarship, The 2009 recipient of the Westpac Redlands Art Prizeand has twice been a finalist of the Helen Lemprier NSW Travelling Arts Scholarship.

He has also exhibited recently at Nextwave festival in Melbourne and Locksmith Projects and has upcoming shows at Peloton and in the Grantpirrie window space.

About works / performance

My work is about developing works from interests, stories and experience. Each work is stemmed from a different place and passes through a filtration process until it becomes clear how it will be presented as a work. I am currently producing two main bodies of work. Kinetic performing objects and a series of Flag based hanging works. Each come from the similar places however are realized differently. My work is influence by almost anything that interesting to me.

I have recently been interested in crossover between sport and art. I made a work which coincided with the 2009 'Tour de France'. The performance entailed me riding a bike which powered a mechanical device that rolled a backdrop. I drew in the scenery of France on the backdrop during the performance. I am currently researching work with a similar interest in sporting events.
