Vartan Avakian still lives and works in Beirut. He is currently perusing a Masters degree in Architecture and Urban Culture at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona. He studied Communication Arts at Lebanese American University and has since been working professionally in media production and scenic design. His art work is inter-disciplinary work include video, installation, performance and print media.
Popular Media and mediated reality form a major part of my investigation. Besides my academic research of the image of Beirut in Lebanese Pop-action films produced during the war period, I have been recently working with other pop media, like neon signage in the suburbs, comic book covers, discontinued popular toys, school book covers and illustrations. The photo series "Somethings Cannot Be Made in China" looks at the surface details of banal consumer products in an attempt to transcend economic transactions. It delves deep to extreme details in an attempt to show novelty in the interaction between consumer and product.
