(Kajsa Ståhl [Sweden] & Maki Suzuki [France/Japan])
Åbäke is a collective of four graphic designers based in London. Much of their work concentrates on the social aspect of design, the strength that collaboration can bring to a project and the context specificity of all projects. Events often involve (in no particular order) film, dancing, reading, eating & cooking and teaching. In all Åbäke reckon they have twelve aliases. To name a few: Kitsuné, Social Pasta, Trattoria & Dent De Leone. The last one being a publishing hut (house).
(Patrick Lacey is from the UK, Kajsa Ståhl from Sweden, Benjamin Reichen and Maki Suzuki from France who decided to work together in the summer of 2000.)
- At the muse da Cidade, Lisbon, Portugal; Åbäke were impressed by the model of Lisbon but noticed the museum itself was absent. They commisioned a local architect to make a model of the museum, which has been geographically placed in relation to the city model -- in the garden behind the building-- creating a "mise en abyme".
(Part of "Timeless" a group show at Experimenta in Lisbon, Portugal, September 2009)
- Dent De Leone, our newly started publishing hut.
Our own publishung hut (house) releasing books with close collaborators or simply people we admire.
- The Tourists, Stanley Picker Gallery Summer 2009 as "The Tourists" in Kingston Upon Thames at the Stanley Picker Gallery.
The wish to react to a given context, including people, time, money, our lack of skills and amateurism. Åbäke means "clumsy."
