Tokyo Wonder Site (TWS) launched its residency programs in 2006, cooperating with art centers and cultural institutions all over the world.
Now we are calling for "Research Residency Program", aimed at both international and local creators who are willing to conduct research activities on arts and culture for new creation in the city of Tokyo.

■Target for this program
This program is aimed at those creators
- who are willing to conduct research activities with their own theme(s) in the city of Tokyo.
- who practice in any of the following cultural/ artistic fields: visual art, music, sound art, performing art, architecture, design, and curation.
■Residency Period/ Number of Creators
(1) From the beginning of May, 2016 to the end of May, 2016 (one month)
(2) From the beginning of June, 2016 to the end of July, 2016 (two months)
(3) From the beginning of September, 2016 to the end of September, 2016 (one month)
(4) From the beginning of October, 2016 to the end of November, 2016 (two months)
(5) From the beginning of January, 2017 to the end of January, 2017 (one month)
(6) From the beginning of February, 2017 to the end of March, 2017 (two months)

2 - 4 creators for each period/ 20 creators in total are to be selected.
■What TWS offers
Self-contained single room and support for research activities
*A twin room will be provided for creators applying as a duo.
*In principle, this program does not provide working studio for the participating creators.
*Any activities making big noise or vibration including playing musical instruments are not allowed in TWS Residency.

[ Research Residency Program 2016 FAQ ]
Q1. Is there any support in covering the cost of travel to Japan?
A. TWS does not provide any financial support.
Q2. Do TWS provide any grants towards production or any other kind of financial supports whilst in Tokyo?
A. TWS does not provide any grants.
Q3. Do you know any funding bodies which would support us for the residency program at TWS?
A. TWS does not introduce any information about funds or grants.
Q4. Do you require certain level of Japanese language skills?
A. We do not require any Japanese language skills. Artists wishing to apply to the program are required to have sufficient ability to communicate in English.
Q5. I would like to produce works while I do research on my subject. Would this combined method of working process fit the research residency program? Or is it more oriented to academic or theoretical research?
A. If your main purpose of the residency is to do research based in "Tokyo" and shows great dedication to the development of art and cultural activities in Tokyo as is noted in the Eligibility, you are eligible. However, we do not provide you the studio.
Q6. I am a practicing curator/administrator/shcolar. Can I apply for this residency program?
A. You are eligible.
Q7. We are artists' duo/group. Is it possible for us to apply together in one single application form with single project?
A. Group artists are acceptable. However, the application forms should be filled in separately from individual creators. Please make sure to send the forms together.
Q8. Do you accept applications sent by e-mail?
A. Only applications by post are accepted and please make sure to send the application form either by certified mail or traceable delivery. (e.g. FedEx, DHL, EMS etc.)
Q9. I applied for previous TWS residency program. Is my application still valid for this program?
A. You no longer use the previous application since it is valid once only. Please send new application for the residency program.
Letters of recommendation
Q10. I am required to submit the application forms including two recommendation letters. Is it acceptable to send scanned copies of the recommendation letters or must they be original letters? If they are originals, is it possible to have them returned?
A. Please send two original recommendation letters (written in English or Japanese). Submitted documents are non returnable.
Q11. May I send two recommendation letters to TWS separately from my application?
A. Two original letters of recommendation have to be sent together with your application.
Residence Facilities/ Support
Q12. What sorts of facilities/support does TWS offer to the successful candidates?
A. Please read the Application Outline 10. Residence Facilities. TWS staffs will help your research.
Q13. Is there any information about TWS Residency?

Q14. Is it possible to travel around Japan for my research, or am I restricted to remain in Tokyo?
A. It is possible. TWS expects artists participating in the program to focus on your research during the residency at TWS Residency. If you need to leave Tokyo for your research, you have to submit a form in advance.
Q15. Do I have to fund myself for additional accommodation and travel expenses elsewhere in Japan, or is there any help?
A. TWS will not provide any financial support for additional accommodation and travel expenses elsewhere in Japan.
Q16. Is it possible to bring my family stay?
A. TWS does not accept other family members to stay.

Q17. We are willing to apply for this residency program as a duo/group. Do you accept the letters of recommendation which is provided as a duo/group? Should we submit 2 individual letters each?
Is it possible to submit just one DVD/CD-R for us as we have created together?
A. Please send us two letters of recommendation for a duo/group.
Just one DVD/CD-R is good enough.
Q18. I have applied another program organized by TWS. Can I apply for this residency program at the same time?
A. Yes, you can.
Q19. I have participated in TWS residency program before. Can I apply for this residency program again?
A. Yes, you can.
Q20. Can you pro-long the application deadline?
A. No, we cannot. Please send your Application Form no later than July 31, 2015.
Q21. I read Application Outline and it is written that "Any activities making big noise or vibration including playing musical instruments are not allowed in TWS Residency." However, how do the musicians and performers work and research if they cannot play?
A. This program focuses on conducting research activities on arts and culture for new creation in the city of Tokyo.
If you bring any electronic musical instrument, you may play it with headphones. Otherwise, please use outside music studios. (TWS staff will help you find one, if necessary). Please note that TWS will not provide any financial support.
