Tokyo Wonder Site Residency program is the platform of creation and research for international creators in diverse fields of creation. Young emerging, middle standing, international leading creators gather and explore their ideas in the heart of Tokyo, where global creative city with multi layers of creativity from traditional culture to cutting edge technology. Tokyo Wonder Site Residency program has been organized by the partnership and collaboration with art centers and cultural institutions around the world since its establishment in 2006. We intend to strengthen the network of creators from Asia.

This open-call program 'International Creator Residency Program' is for established and productive international creators in the field of Visual Art. We provide financial support to allow participants approximately three-month work in residency culminating in a presentation and participating TWS art programs. Through this program, creators will expand their activities in Japan, and gain a jumping board to the international art scene. We are now calling for creators who can perform new creative activities during their programs at TWS Residency for three months.

1. Application Overview(Residency period/ Number of Applicants to be accepted):
1) About 3 months from the beginning of September to the end of November, 2015/ 2 applicants
2) About 3 months from the beginning of January to the end of March, 2016/ 2 applicants

2. Conditions
Self-contained single room, Shared studio, Air ticket fee, Per Diem and Artist fee
-Air ticket fee: a Round ticket will be provided
-Living cost (Per Diem): JPY 3,750 (including tax) per day
-Artist fee: JPY 300,000 (including tax)
*Installation and De-installation costs for the result presentation are not included.

3. Eligibility
1) Reside in the outside of Japan. (Japanese creators based in the outside of Japan are applicable)
2) Have to be a creator in the field of Visual Art whose experience in the specialized area is longer than 5 years.
3) Able to stay consecutively at TWS during the proposed residency period.
4) Have sufficient ability to communicate in English with other residing creators and TWS staffs and deepen the mutual understanding and cultural exchange with other residing creators.
5) Independent and capable of working and living on his/ her own.
6) Show the great dedication to the development of art and cultural activities in Tokyo.
7) Shall present the Report of Activity at the Result Presentation.
8) Capable to perform the presentation in Open Studio and other programs as well as Educational Programs hosted by TWS if TWS requires and cooperates with the public relations' activity to promote the programs hosted by TWS.
9) Comply the regulations of TWS during residency period and submit documents such as Creator information/ Portfolio/ Activity Report/ Provided Images/ Activity Report after your Residency Period/ to TWS.
10) Not carry out any commercial activities and any other profit activities except TWS, throughout the duration of the Program.
11) Able to conduct procedures for obtaining a visa by himself/ herself.

4. Application Period
From February 13, 2015 to March 31, 2015
*Application Form must be arrived at TWS Residency no later than March 31, 2015

5. Selection Schedule
Selection stage: review with external juries in April, 2015
*The final results will be announced only to the successful applicants by the beginning of May, 2015.
We will announce the final result on our website by the middle of May, 2015.
*We do not respond to any individual enquiries on the selection process and result.

6. Application Method
Please download Application Package below and read through Manual (.pdf file) in Manual folder carefully. Please send your application together with all materials of 7. Application once to TWS Residency referring to 9. Address information for sending your application. Application must be sent either by certified mail or traceable delivery (e.g. FedEx, DHL, EMS etc.) and must be arrived at TWS Residency no later than the deadline stated above.

7. Application
1) One printed Application Form: have to be filled in English
*It has to be undersigned by the applicant checking ☑in application form.
*Please fill in the form referring to Sample (.pdf file).
2) Two letters of recommendation: have to be prepared by each referee (stated at section 12 in Application Form) from two different Art and Cultural institutions or related educational organization or professionals specialized in the field of art and culture.
*Letters must be original copies with signature by the referees and written in English or Japanese and free templates as A4 format.
3) One DVD or CD-ROM: referring to Manual (.pdf file), store the filled Application Form and data materials (stated at section 17 in Application Form) saved in each folder on DVD or CD-ROM.
*Please write your name clearly on DVD or CD-ROM.
4) Additional materials (Option): can be submitted to support your application.
(e.g. Portfolio, DVD or CD [production version], Publications such as Catalogues or books)

*Any application which does not meet the requirements stated in this outline will not be accepted.
*Application is non-returnable.

8. Residence Facilities
Single room (25㎡) 
All rooms have bath & toilet, basic furniture, electrical appliances, kitchen with cutlery, towels, linens and Internet using a LAN cable.
TWS provides following facilities as common use.
* Available time 9:30 a.m.-10:00 p.m.
- Shared Studio
- Networking Room (with kitchen facilities, i-Mac, printer, TV)
- Library
- Washing machines
- Wifi internet connection *All day

11. Policy of Personal information usage
TWS uses your personal information solely for contacting you on this program. TWS never uses or shares your personal information provided to us in ways unrelated to the one described above also providing you an opportunity to opt-out otherwise prohibit such unrelated uses.


*This Program is finalized to be implemented under the condition of obtaining the approval for the Annual Plan 2015 of Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture by the board of directors by the end of March 2015.

Conditions

Q1. As stated in the Application Outline Conditions, "Installation and de-installation costs for the result presentation are not included". What does it mean exactly? 

A. During the residency period, result presentation as "Open Studio" will be covered by Artists Fee. 

Q2. In case of applying for a residency program as a duo and being selected, the fee for the project will include travel expenses and fee for both artists?

A. Air ticket (e-ticket) and Per Diem will be provide each creator but Artist fee will be paid as a group.


Eligibility

Q3. Do you require certain level of Japanese language skills?

A. No we do not require any Japanese language skills. Artists wishing to apply to the program are required to have sufficient ability to communicate in English.

Q4. Is it possible to take part in the program only for a month? (due to personal reason)

A.TWS could not admit one month residency and expects Artist to stay consecutively during the proposed residency period.

Application

Q5. I applied for previous TWS residency program. Is my application still valid for this program?

A. You no longer use the previous application since it is valid once only. Please use new application for the residency program.

Q6. I am not sure where the field of my art forms and activities belong to.

A. Please refer to the information below. 
Visual Art includes: painting, sculpture, photography, Installation etc.
Performing Art includes: contemporary dance, theatre performance, opera etc.
Media Art includes:video art, internet art, interactive art etc.
You are also able to confirm this information referring to 8. Field of Art forms and activities on the Sample(.pdf file) in Application Package.

Q7. We are artists' duo/group. Is it possible for us to apply together in one single application form with single project? 

A. Group artists are acceptable. However, the Application Forms should be filled in separately from individual creators. Please make sure to send the forms together.

Q8. Do you accept applications sent by e-mail?

A. Only applications being sent either by certified mail or traceable delivery (e.g. FedEx, DHL, EMS etc.) are accepted.

Q9. I am a Japanese creator based in the outside of Japan. May I fill in the application form in Japanese? 

A. Filling in the application form in Japanese will be acceptable.


Letters of recommendation

Q10. I am required to submit the application form including two recommendation letters. Is it acceptable to send scanned copies of the recommendation letters or must they be original letters? If they are originals, is it possible to have them returned?

A. Please send two original recommendation letters (written in English or Japanese). Submitted documents are non returnable.

Q11. May I send two recommendation letters to TWS separately from my application?

A. Two original letters of recommendation have to be sent together with your application form.


Residence Facilities/ Support

Q12. What sorts of facilities does TWS offer to the successful candidates?

A. You basically need to prepare the equipment by yourself. TWS has few basic tools like saws, hammers as well as Pliers and minimum equipment like projectors, speakers, DVD players and so on.  It is limited of the variety and the number.

Q13. What sorts of support does TWS offer to the successful candidates?

A. TWS staffs help you to be able to get what you need for your work or research.

Q14. Is there any information about TWS Residency?

A. Please find information in the Application Outline and visit the following website for more information: TWS Residency

Q15. Is it possible to travel around Japan for my artwork and research, or am I restricted to remain in Tokyo? 

A. Artists participating in the program are expected to focus on their research during the residency at TWS Residency. If you need to stay outside TWS Residency for your work or research, you have to submit a form in advance. If you leave TWS residency due to your personal reason, TWS will not provide Per Diem in your absent period. 

Q16. Do I have to fund myself for additional accommodation and travel expenses elsewhere in Japan, or is there any help?

A. TWS will not provide any financial support for additional accommodation and travel expenses elsewhere in Japan.

Q17. It's not possible to bring my family stay. Is this right?

A. It is possible only in case TWS admit that it is necessary.

Q18. I applied for both of residency periods. Would it be possible to choose the period by myself if I were selected?

A. You are not able to choose a residency period. TWS will choose and make the decision.

Q19. Do you accept application from literary artist?

A. As it is said 3. Eligibility, No.2 on the Application Outline, we accept the creators who is in the field of Visual Art whose experience in the specialized area is longer than 5 years. Research Residency Program accepts writer's application. Please see this page.


Q20. Can I apply for both of "International Creator Residency Program" and "Research Residency Program". In case that my application is not suitable for "International Creator Residency Program", TWS would offer me for "Research Residency Program"?

A. If you want to apply for both of programs, please make two applications according to each program's 6. Application Method in the outline. And then, please enclose two applications and send it by post.
