TWS aoyama

What's a Creator-in-Residence?

Tokyo Wonder Site is a creative and communications platform for the city's arts. It develops more than conventional cross-cultural ex-change programs, as part of its role as a creative communications base supporting artistic activities that contribute to building of a new metropolis of divers cultures and values.
An artist-in-residence program allows artist to stay and create in a location for a fixed period of time. At Tokyo Wonder Site, we provide a temporary home not only for artists, but people working in creative fields such as design, music and architecture as well, as part of our Creator-in-Residence Program, situated in the Aoyama district in central Tokyo, know for its fashion and creative scene.TWS Aoyama is a large facility with 16 rooms for accommodations and 5 studios, and develops new programs in close cooperation with TWS Hongo dedicated to supporting emerging artists in their early careers and TWS Sibuya, which serves as a venue for exhibiting the works of more established, international artist.
TWS Aoyama:Creator-in-Residence provides opportunities for residents to enjoy Tokyo's stimulating environment while talking and working with other creators at every career stage, making it a hub for interactive communication.

Diverse Residency Programs

TWS Aoyama:Creator-in-Residence provides a truly diverse range of opportunities for exchange for people of age or gender, and working in any genre. Creative people including artists, curators, researchers, musicians, performers and designers are able to experience the rich history and culture of Tokyo, do research and work, and exhibit their creations. The central location means that creators can enjoy interactions not solely with their peers, but also with the general public through events, talks, open studios and workshops. TWS Aoyama:Creator-in-Residence Program serves as networking linking artists, visitors and Tokyo's patron of the arts, with the goal of promoting the city's creative culture to the world.

The TWS CiR Open Studio will showcase the work of creators invited or sent to take part in the Creator in Residence (CiR) program at Tokyo Wonder Site (TWS) in 2011.

With the 21st century came a growing recognition of the importance of creative hubs in art production; of places where creative individuals can mix and inspire each other, forming new cultural currents. Residency programs too continue to grow more vital than ever as settings for the creation of art.

TWS serves as a Tokyo platform for the work of creators from across the globe. Every year around one hundred individuals take part in the program, dedicating themselves enthusiastically to the production of artworks both in Tokyo and at designated locations overseas. Day-to-day art research and production take place at TWS throughout the year, artists in residence and other creators interacting and encouraging each other to take new and exciting directions in their work.

Tokyo Story is a collection of Tokyo tales spun by creators, tales born out of Tokyo, and tales spun by Tokyo.

A story from Tokyo dedicated to returning hope and good cheer to the Japanese capital, and to Japan as a whole; to helping make the whole world a better place through the power of creativity.

===================================

"On Site Lab Workshop Series" is a program of creative educational workshops in which creators representing different genres and nationalities work together to explore opportunities for taking on social issues. In the 6th edition of the series, participants working under the overall theme of Creative Dialogue and Commitment to the Environment will seek to open new intellectual horizons though research, lectures, and art production, guided by tutors who are active at the forefront of their fields both in Japan and overseas.

Issues addressed over the previous 5 years include "+hand", "shoreline environments", "global warming and greening efforts", "garbage", and "luxurious time and space". This time the program looks at the issue of new community design. In the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake, experiments in the building of new communities are underway in many places around Japan. This is a unique opportunity to discuss, consider, and act together to build a social system founded on new values, with a long-term vision, encompassing a comprehensive range of fields including culture, economy, and environment. What sort of environment is needed for a true revival? The workshop program will explore the nature of sustainable living through research in community design covering diverse fields such as information design, urban planning, and fine arts and culture.
