Based on a concept suggested by Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara, the Metropolitan Government launched Tokyo Wonder Wall in 2000 with the aim to discover new talent in the contemporary art scene through public subscription exhibitions. What distinguishes the Tokyo Wonder Wall concept is the included process of unfolding hidden talent by presenting the works of young, as-yet-unrecognized artists to a broad audience.

The process of Tokyo Wonder Wall Once every year, approximately 100 artists are chosen from more than 1,000 entries. Exhibitions of the selected artists' works are held every summer at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (MOT). From these 100 artists, 12 prizewinners are chosen, whose works are then displayed for one month each at the arcade gallery that connects the Tokyo Metropolitan Government No. 1 Building with the diet building. Those exhibitions are accompanied by talk sessions with the respective artists.
